Baby, Take Some PRIDE in Yourself

Celebrated every June, Pride Month honours the LGBTQIA2S+ community and its ongoing fight for equal rights. Its origins are deeply intertwined with the Black liberation movement, highlighting the intersectionality of the struggle for civil rights.
The catalyst for what became Pride Month was the Stonewall Uprising of June 1969, a series of spontaneous demonstrations by the  LGBTQIA2S+ community in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Among the leading figures of this pivotal moment were Black and Latinx transgender women like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Their bravery and leadership galvanized the movement, emphasizing the crucial role of people of colour in the fight for  LGBTQIA2S+ rights.
Marsha P. Johnson, in particular, became a symbol of resistance. As a Black trans woman, she faced compounded discrimination but remained a steadfast advocate for LGBTQIA2S+ and homeless youth. Her efforts, alongside those of countless others, laid the groundwork for the first Pride marches, which began as acts of defiance and celebration of identity in June 1970.
Pride Month's Black origins are a reminder that the fight for LGBTQIA2S+ rights cannot be separated from the fight for racial justice. This interconnected struggle continues today, as the LGBTQIA2S+ community advocates for equality while recognizing and addressing the unique challenges faced by its Black members. The legacy of figures like Marsha P. Johnson inspires ongoing activism and serves as a call to honour the diverse roots of Pride Month.
This month, and every month we salute you.
